Taphonomy of Pleistocene Cave Deposits

The Breitscheid/Erdbach cave-system (southern Germany) was opened in the year 1993 by mining operations in devonic lomestones. It contains a rich pleistocene mammal fauna. The outstanding relevance of this fossil deposit is, that its cave floor taphozönose has most probably not been disturbed since the younger Pleistocene. This rarely preserved situation has been taphonomically documented in a pilot project.

The cave system is now a protected natural heritage site.
